Genesis are proud to support Hanqing Ma & Mona Yoo with the production of their artwork ‘Glimpse’ (produced as Direct to Media UV prints on shaped aluminium and bent after printing) for KCCUK 2016 Artist of the Year Koo Jeong A’s exhibition: ‘Riptide’.

Reflecting on the global nature of the participating artists, the exhibition title refers to the various clusters of opposing energies which meet to form the exhibition. Since 2014, KCCUK’s Artist of the Year exhibition programme has introduced Korea’s vibrant contemporary art scene to UK audiences.

Riptide marks Koo Jeong A’s selection as 2016 Artist of the Year and it follows her ‘Art Night’ installation on a disused platform in London’s Charing Cross Underground Station, curated by the Institute of Contemporary Arts, and independent curator, Kathy Noble.

For Riptide, Koo’s  departure point was the line drawing ‘Civilising Process’, created by Jeong A in 2005, which formed part of her artist-book project ‘Koo Jeong-A: R’ (2006) by Swiss Re, and consisted of 1001 line drawings – each referring to One Thousand and One Nights. This book was a departure point for a number of projects and aimed to open up the possibilities of creating alternative narratives and stories. At the KCCUK, Koo exhibits 20 drawings that have been selected and enlarged to A0 size, and additionally extends an invitation to fellow artists to transform a solo show into a dynamic collaborative project.

Participating artists include: Kyung Roh Bannwart (born in Korea/lives and works in Neuchatel), Melissa Dubbin & Aaron S. Davidson (lives and works in New York), Yva Jung (born in Korea, lives and works in London), Hanqing Ma & Mona Yoo ( Born in China and USA, both live and work in Beijing), Martin Roth (born in Austria, lives and works in New York) and Matthias Sohr (lives and works in Berlin).

As playing Chinese whispers, each visual conversations will lead the audience to an unexpected path, departing from his rethinking of the material effect of Koo’s drawings.

The exhibition features Genesis clients Hanqing Ma & Mona Yoo, who exhibit pieces produced using our Direct to Media UV Printing process on shaped aluminium.

Hanqing Ma & Mona Yoo, Glimpse, 2016, Mixed medium, variable size:

The shadow is a spontaneous element of the space. Our practice intends to explore an objective form of the shadow by transferring a photographic image into architectural gestures and three dimensional objects. The tangible conditions of display address floor and ceiling as unseen spaces in the gallery, as well as the waving shadows. This spatial factor is in conversation with Koo Jeong A’s drawing piece, civilizing process, that implies a sense of uncertainty and a place of the unknowable. As for the medium, the drawing can be seen as a narrative image which has inspired us to re-render /organize the space and to activate the viewer by creating a spatial narration and sensing experience.
