Amore E Piombo: The Photography Of Extremes In 1970’s Italy offers an unparalleled collection of photographs, made by a group of photographers working for the Rome-based agency Team Editorial Services, initiating viewers into the tumultuous era of 1970s Italy. Presented by Photoworks and the Archive of Modern Conflict, this installation-based exhibition, curated by Roger Hargreaves and Federica Chiocchetti, launches at this year’s Brighton Photo Biennial. It combines stills photography, television news footage, film sequences and sound recordings, combined with a choice of Italian photo-books of the period loaned from the Martin Parr collection.

Team Editorial Services, founded in the mid-1960sby journalist Franco Lef̬vre, a wartime member of the Resistenza, emerged out of a new, tabloid style of confrontational images, disseminated to an international market in the boom years of the Italian film industry. In the late 1950s and 1960s Rome attracted glittering stars, with films like La Dolce Vita and Cleopatrashot on location, fostering a new paparazzi movement of photography. As the late 1960s gave way to the 1970s, the political tensions of the period intensified. With Italy descending into near civil war, the money was now in pictures of demonstrations, riots, kidnappings and terrorism, enacted for the news cameras to gain attention around the world. The Team Editorial photographers were on hand Рtrained, armed, supply lines in placeand ready to roll.

Amore e Piombo: The Photography of Extremes in 1970’s Italy is a Photoworks and Archive of Modern Conflict co-commission for Brighton Photo Biennial 2014, curated by Roger Hargreaves and Federica Chiocchetti. Presented in partnership with the Archive of Modern Conflict and Brighton & Hove Museums and Galleries.

Genesis Imaging are delighted to support the exhibition with the production of almost 150 bespoke frames.
