Genesis are delighted to announce that the Genesis Postgraduate Award is back for the second year. This time, the award is open to all universities in England and for students to self-submit for our production grant.
From years of experience working with students, we’re only too aware of the financial pressures faced in the production of final work. And of our responsibility to help foster new talent as leaders in production for the creative industries.
The award is comprised of full production of one individual’s degree show using our range of services (up to the value of £2000). Alongside 12 months mentoring and support, promotion via our newsletter and social media channels and invites to industry events and exhibitions.
The award is our way of encouraging the next generation of arts practitioners, who have taken a leap to complete a postgraduate degree in photography or art related disciplines.

Genesis Imaging Postgraduate Award Judging Panel 2019:
Mark Foxwell
Creative director of Genesis Imaging, Mark Foxwell is based in London and is a photographic printer of 40 years standing, working closely with renowned Photographers and Artists. His prints have graced the walls of some of the top museums and galleries in the world, including MOMA and the Tate Modern. He is consumed by Photography as it is as much part of him, as his DNA. His current aim and hope is to give back as much as he has gained from this passion.
Chris Hoare
Chris Hoare is a photographer born in Bristol, 1989. He is in the process of completing an MA in Photography at the University of the West of England, whilst working as both an associate lecturer at Coventry University and in the gallery at the Martin Parr Foundation. Chris was the 2018 Genesis Postgraduate Bursary Award Winner for our inaugural award.
Within his personal work he is interested in areas of society that he feels are overlooked, interested in exploring themes of identity and place. He is increasingly drawn to speculative documentary’, excited by the possibilities that come with telling visual stories in a loose metaphorical way.
Photocaptionist
The Photocaptionist is a on and offline curatorial and editorial platform that explores the relationship between photography, fictions and words. Founded and directed by writer and curator Federica Chiocchetti it experiments with photo-text practices through online features, exhibitions, publications, lectures and events. Cultural partners over the years include Foam, Shakespeare and Company, David Solo, Jaipur Photo and Tokyo Photo Festival among others. Chiocchetti will judge the Genesis Imaging Postgraduate Bursary Award 2019 with Photocaptionist’s managing editor Lisa Stein, who is also an editor at the Burlington Magazine.
Nicola Shipley
Nicola Shipley works as a Producer, Curator, Project Manager, Mentor and Consultant specialising in photography. She trained as an art historian, has an MA in History of Art, and now is engaged in commissioning, exhibitions, collections, public art, artists education and professional development. She is currently Director of GRAIN Projects, based in Birmingham UK, where she works with established and emerging artists and photographers. Recent projects include working with Edgar Martins, Indre Serpytyte, Sam Ivan, Liz Hingley, Anthony Luvera, Arpita Shah and Kate Peters. Collaborations include with Format International Photography Festival, Magnum Photos, Redeye Photography Network, Brighton Photo Fringe, Library of Birmingham, The Hive Arts Centre, Herbert Art Gallery, Birmingham City University, University of Birmingham, IED – Madrid, Guangzhou Library and British Council China, Ffotogalleriet, Oslo, Appetite – Creative People and Places, MAC Birmingham and Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery.
Rodrigo Orrantia
Rodrigo Orrantia is an art historian and curator, specialising in photography. Since graduating with an MA in Contemporary and Historical Photography from Sotheby’s Institute of Art, he has worked on projects for major museums in the UK, along with art fairs and festivals in UK, Europe and Latin America. Orrantia is a regular speaker at Universities in the UK and France, and a reviewer at international photography festivals. He recently won the Format Habitat Award for Modern Ornithologies, an exhibition of photobooks on birds.
In 2015 he was awarded Exceptional Talent in the Arts status by Arts Council England for work in the arts, specifically for curating and producing collaborative projects to connect local communities with international artists.
Orrantia is currently researching connections between photography, geography and place, with an interest in nature and its relationship with the urban/man made/artificial environment.
