As part of our dedication to the next generation of creative practitioners, Genesis is delighted to support MA students at Westminster University.

The two bursaries awarded to MA students are comprised of: £200 credit towards our professional printing and finishing services; a year’s mentoring from our very own Creative Director, Mark Foxwell; and a VIP ticket to Photo London (which admits two).

The 2017 Westminster MA Degree Show was made up of two exhibitions:

Light into Matter – for the Photography Arts MA

Out of Dust – for the Documentary Photography and Photojournalism MA

Each students’ work was presented in a central London Arts space.

The two bursary award winners are chosen by Mark Foxwell, Genesis’ Creative Director. Choosing just just two recipients for our bursary awards is always a tough choice, and this year was no exception, with an exceptionally high standard of work.

This years’ Genesis Imaging Bursary Award recipients are Joanna Burejza (from the Photography Arts MA) and Thana Faroq (from the Documentary Photography and Photojournalism MA), who we very much look forward to working with on the production of their respective bodies of work.

Joanna Burejza on her winning project, When Dark Rain Ends:

I started this project on the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster; many of the images were made in an abandoned cold war bunker in Warsaw, the site of radiation tolerance tests carried out in the wake of the incident. I was a child living in a Polish town 800 kilometers from ground zero. This work is a map of my own nuclear anxiety.

Thana Faroq on her winning project, The Passport:

The project explores the experiences of people who are hindered by their passports. It is about the people who are banned from entering countries; asylum seekers and stateless individuals who cross oceans and land masses to obtain a passport that will guarantee them a higher value in life. Calling on my own experience, this book reflects on freedom and the limitations placed on some people to come and go across jurisdictional spaces.

We very much look forward to seeing how Joanna and Thana choose to develop their individual practice over the forthcoming year.
