About the Award:
In addition to the existing support we currently offer to students of Nottingham Trent University, London College of Communication and Westminster University and our student and graduate discounts, we announced earlier this year the inaugural Genesis Postgraduate Bursary Award – full production of one individual’s degree show (up to the value of £2000) alongside 12 months mentoring and support, promotion via our newsletter and social media channels and invites to industry events and exhibitions. Commended entries receive 30% discount to use across our services alongside a complimentary ticket to Photo London fair in May.
The award is our way of encouraging the next generation of arts practitioners who have taken a leap to complete a postgraduate degree in photography or art related disciplines in the South of England.
The Selection Process:
Lecturers or course associates selected entrants to put forward not only from the institution they worked for, but in some cases, other courses or institutions. Each student nominated was asked to supply up to 10 images (image files themselves or shots in situ) and a statement reflecting their intent for the degree show, of up to 500 words. The work submitted reflected diversity of photographic practice today and is testament to the skill of those practicing art and photography in creative courses at university today.

The Genesis Postgraduate Bursary Award – Winner:
Chris Hoare, The University of the West of England, Bristol
“My practice is based on reality, it is a culmination of portraits, landscapes and details. Using these as tools I am interested on playing with narrative and storytelling, often in a metaphorical (hopefully lyrical) way, expressing ideas about reality and real life situations, by investigating themes I find particularly pertinent. The series submitted is from a long term project where I have been investigating – in the above mentioned approach – the supposed fortuity that Australia as a country affords its citizens, with its reputation as a Lucky Country’ as a starting point”
The Genesis Postgraduate Bursary Award – Commended Entries:

“The Blindest Man investigates the character and condition of the treasure hunter, fixated on the promise of riches, adventure, knowledge and intellectual accolades. The work is based on the real story of an unsolved treasure hunt, in which an artist’s golden sculpture is buried in France. The treasure has been hidden in the ground now for more than 25 years. The hunt proposes that the solutions will take participants through locations across France relating to the historical narrative of the country.
A community of people search for the gold, guided by a book of allusive clues, released by an anonymous author. The author is now dead. The competition was designed to be solved within a few years, but the community that has developed around it (through an online forum, cited as one of the earliest virtual communities), has fuelled competition and obsessions, within which rumour, misinformation and red herrings spread, confusing individual routes of investigation.”

“My work focuses on humanitarian and environmental issues. The project I have submitted follows the lives of full-time anti-fracking activists. With many anti-fracking communities set up across the county to oppose fracking, I visited the Kirby Misperton Protesters Camp, North Yorkshire – an area that had seen protest occupiers living off the grid’ since December 2016. For just over a year they occupied a field, creating a living space for themselves in custom built wooden shacks or caravans. I got to know the community, and more about the industry that threatens our countryside, wildlife and health.”
